Surplus to Requirements is the first title available from Longdendale Press.
A novel, set in 2050, it is a dystopia, the story of the Old'un, a 79 year old woman who lives in the North of England. Social breakdown and the cruelty of The Regime means that she is 'Required to Die', under the 2041 Act. She is not alone: many are surplus to requirements due to disability, age and economic inactivity. The story follows her decision to make a bid for freedom by travelling to independent Scotland. It features the people she meets on the way, particularly a small group of young people who travel with her.
If you are fascinated by the history of the English Speaking People in the North of England, particularly before the Norman Conquest, especially if you know the version written by Bede the 8th century, or you have ever visited York or Holy Island then there will be people and places in the book you will connect with.
If you like walking and story telling, try this book. It includes a walk along Hadrian's Wall from east to west; a walk you can do yourself along what is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
If you have ever been Surplus to Requirements or know others who are then come on this journey with the Old'un and learn about resistance.
This book is the first novel of Janet Lees, a writer from Longdendale. It is available from your usual bookseller, or on line in both e-book format and print on demand.
A word from the author: there are some scenes of violence and use of strong language in this book.
